POSITION SUMMARY:  Responsible for providing the assistance to the physician which allows patient care to be delivered in an accurate and timely manner.  


Essential Functions:

  1. Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
  2. Initiate documentation of the patient's chief complaint, history of present illness, review of systems, and all pertinent ocular findings accurately and in accordance with compliance guidelines. Perform testing to include visual acuity measurements, tonometry, evaluation of EOM's, confrontation visual field testing, OCTs, and pupillary function. Other testing that may be requested for example color vision, lensometry,  automated perimetry and other patient services per physician request. Administer topical and oral medications at the direction of the physician.  
  3. Assist with intraocular injections, laser treatments and other procedures in the office as requested by the physician. Remove and apply dressings as directed. Inventory and maintain instruments and equipment in accordance with OSHA standards. Educate patients regarding administration of medications, and pre- and post-operative/procedure instructions as directed by the physician.  Complete requests for prescription refills or e prescribing as authorized by physician with full documentation in patient chart.
  4. Inventory and report medications and medical supplies needs.
  5. Open and close exam lanes daily, ensuring that equipment is cleaned and disinfected in an appropriate manner, battery powered instruments are seated properly in recharge wells, slit lamps and projectors are switched off and are under covers. Assist with maintenance of clinical examination equipment. 
  6. Follow all safety procedures as per protocol guidelines.
  7. Proficient in all aspects of EHR.

Other Functions:

  1. Coordinate, communicate effectively with and assist other departments.
  2. Provide other patient services as requested.
  3. Perform other duties as assigned.


  1. Physician office wherever located requiring travel both in own vehicle and company sponsored van.
  2. Flexible hours.
  3. Very busy office, high patient volume.


  1. High school diploma; previous ophthalmic experience or formal training program is desirable or completion of on-the-job training upon hiring. Outstanding interpersonal skills as well as a neat and professional appearance.  Must have a working knowledge of computer use.


  1. Position requires a great deal of initiative and flexibility to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  2. Must be congenial at all times.
  3. Must be able to communicate with physicians, patients, co-workers and supervisors.
  4. Must be willing to help in all areas and understand the need for efficient use of time.
  5. Skills will be evaluated annually.


  1. Good hearing and visual acuity are required, as is the ability to assist in lifting patients from wheelchairs to examination chairs or assisting onto stretcher. May be required to stand for long periods of time.  Must be able to move about the office quickly with frequent stooping and bending.
